What is Lapwing-Linux?
Lapwing-Linux is Slackware based "lite" desktop distribution. Lapwing-Linux is a distro thats not full of bloat and fat but includes all the software needed to be useful; we don't provide 6 different text editors. But we also don't restrict the user to having just what we give them, we make it easy to add, remove and rip to shreds everything in Lapwing-Linux if the user wants to.
What are Lapwing-Linux's aims?
They are currently;
- Easy to learn; for all computer users, from expert Windows users to computer newbies
- Easy to administer; it shouldn't be a chore to get new software or configure it
- Easy to tinker; understandable options and scripts, let the user decide how things work
- Easy to recover; in case the user does foul it up, easy to get something working again
- Easy to blow up; just kidding :-)
How is Lapwing-Linux different from all the other GNU/Linux distros out there?
It doesn't use the current development model of "freezing" packages for a release; the core packages (such as glibc, GCC, UDEV etc) are frozen to ensure stability, but all packages "above" this are renewed as and when needed.
What? Lapwing-Linux is inherently unstable?
It shouldn't be more unstable than any other distro, it will just provide the latest code for each project. Since Lapwing-Linux can update packages rapidly, most bugs would be removed by the upstream developers than patched by Lapwing-Linux developers.
Who is it aimed at?
Everyone who wants an up-to-date GNU/Linux desktop system, be they newbies or kernel hacks. Lapwing-Linux tries to make using and developing GNU/Linux easy, so if you want to develop applications for us, feel free. If you want to just use the software and provide feedback, feel free.
Lapwing-Linux also isn't afraid to try "experimental" options; again tying in with the inclusive nature of the distro, if you want to develop an experimental Telepathy front end and have it used by us, contact us, and we'll include it for you.
Why not use Ubuntu/Fedora/Mandriva, why start another distro?
Yes, use Ubuntu/Fedora/Mandriva etc, thats the freedom GNU/Linux gives you. I just don't like the way they do things, and feel a little stymied in their approaches; you need people to try new ways.
