No, its still not done. Although updates are occurring, my perfectionist attitude has taken over somewhat; there are so many areas of 2009 I'm not happy with (lack of decent root escalation support, poor package support, lack of an installer, the bugs) I'm considering just dumping 2009 onto a Slackware installer disc and using that with a mind to starting again for 2010.
I'm also in two minds about lapwing-web whether to do that first, then concentrate on Lapwing-Linux?, or to try to do both at the same time.
Time will tell.

No, its not done yet :P
I've had a lot to do recently, and will do for the foreseeable future. Having a job with odd and fluctuating hours doesn't help either.

I've had some emails via the "Contact Us" page, requesting information; I've gone to reply then realised theres no email address to return to.
If you've recently sent me a something via the "Contact Us" page, please re send it with an email in the message body so I can reply.
Also, I've swithced domain name registrar and will be messing about with the DNS servers soon so if it all goes dark here, don't panic, I've just hit the wrong thing.

2009.0 nearing journey's end

Lapwing-Linux? 2009.0 is nearing the end of it's journey. Its only taken me 18 months.

With 2009.0 arriving imminently, I've taken the opportunity to clean up the licensing policy a bit.
Any Lapwing-Linux? related media (eg artwork, wallpapers, logos etc) will be released under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial? Share Alike UK 2.0 licence.
The idea is to allow people to mashup the distro and redistribute but restrict people making money off an official release; if you want to sell Lapwing-Linux?, you'll have to remove the lapwing-* packages first.
I'm hoping that this will allow people to do all the FOSS stuff but not make money off the Lapwing-Linux? name, but avoid all the trademark rubbish that Red Hat, Novell and Canonical have had to go through.

Onward to release day!

Lapwing 2009.0 with aax_base 2009.1

I'm going to get Xorg 7.5 rolled into 2009.0 before release, and I'm going to peg major releases to a few weeks after Xorg major releases (Xorg 7.6 is due October 2010). This will hopefully kick me into some forward gear.

Installer GUI frontend is done, API documentation exists; just need to wire up the actual installation code and test the lot before I can roll a release out.

I'm looking forward to releasing 2009 and working on non-release projects, like improvement to vanellus, peewit and writing a Java based web app for Lapwing, possibly replacing TikiWiki? which is sluggish in page loading.

Onward and upward.

2009.0; the never ending journey

I am working on 2009.0, really.
At the moment though I'm currently ripping out and replacing old bits of code, such as GTK, parts of aaa_base, adding DirectFB with splashy and uswsusp support, I'm eyeing up including Xorg 7.5 in 2009.1, and the security advisories I have ready to push out.
There are ~50 updates that I'll be adding in the next few days, so I am sort of rolling toward a release.
As ever, stay tuned.

2009.0 will be released soon

... after a number of critical, remotely exploitable bugs are fixed in some aaa_base packages (such as openssl, libxml, the kernel, and curl). There are also a number of other critical security bugs for other packages that are awaiting new releases to fix them (such as gst-plugins-good, gnutls, libtiff, mplayer)

Work is ongoing toward a release, however I really don't want to release with known bugs still extant.

Thanks for bearing with me on this stupidly long release.

Site borkage, ongoing 2009.0 saga

Updating TikiWiki? from 2.4 to 3.0 using Fantastico was a little more fraught than I had expected; cut a long story short, it was quicker to delete TikiWiki?, install 3.0 fresh and import the old data.
The CSS styles have also changed between 2.4 and 3.0, hence the pastel blue rather than orange; I will hopefully be fixing this in the coming days.

I will also be moving house in the next week, so development of Lapwing-Linux? 2009.0 will halt (again). There are also some outstanding security bugs (most prominently in OpenSSL) that I want fixing before shipping 2009.0.

Projects renamed

I've been mulling over switching the two project names vanellus and peewit for some time; peewit is (according to wikipedia) what the call of the lapwing sounds like, which is more suited to the Telepathy client; vanellus sounds imposing and slightly sinister, more suited to the control centre where you can seriously damage your system.

OK, its probably just me who sees it that way, but the projects have been renamed accordingly.

The bug trackers have also moved to their respective Github repositories; this also makes more sense to me in the long run.

In other news, Lapwing-Linux 2009.0 is nearing completion, it is now just a matter of getting the installer finished and the liveCD created and tested. Look out for a RC ISO in the next few days.

At the risk of Lapwing-Linux 2009.0 sounding like Duke Nukem Forever, I've had to push it back again.
It's probably safe to assume that it will be released at some point in the next 3-4 weeks, as it is now just the installer that is the last major component needing to be finished, with some other minor package updates and additions.
Hopefully 2009.0 will be of use to someone :)

Lapwing-Linux 2009.0 Release

Yes. I've pushed it back, and back, and back. This is mainly due to university work being priority, followed by some stuff in the Real World (TM); as such Lapwing-Linux? has had to take a backseat.

This doesn't mean to say I've been resting on my laurels; there are a slew of new and updated packages in the repository, I've been testing the new 2.6.29.1 kernel and trying to get Splashy to play nicely with initramfs.

As my university workload starts to ease off and after XFCE 4.6.1 is released (which should be soon), I will be able to blitz through the last remaining hurdles (LiveCD, peewit and some spit and polish) to release Lapwing-Linux? 2009.0 for April 30th.

In line with Trying to Get Things Done (TM) and in preparation for moving house in June I've moved the Projects' Git repository to github.com. I've updated the relevant links in the wiki, so you should reconfigure your copies as outlined here.
